Be Kind. Now. After. More Often.
– Zara Suleman
To say these are challenging times is an understatement, I know.
People’s lives are in upheaval. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought us physically farther apart from each other while also highlighting how much we need to connect and how reliant we are on one another to get through this crisis.
We may not have control over much right now but we do have control over being kind to each other.
Law, and specifically the practice of family law, does not always evoke the idea of “kindness”.
Most people don’t refer to their family law lawyers or colleagues as “kind” that often.
But during this time, while courts are operating under restricted and limited capacity, and while lawyers are navigating a new world of legal practice which requires more coming together to negotiate versus litigate, I am seeing more kindness and more capacity to be flexible, reasonable and understanding.
Colleagues are checking in with each other, not just about the law but personally.
Kindness makes us better. Better lawyers, Better people.
If there is something we take away and carry forward from this crisis, let it be kindness.
